This Premier League encounter has leaned in Aston Villa’s favour in recent seasons. Earlier this campaign, Villa edged the reverse fixture 2–1, and if we rewind to the same matchup last season at Villa Park, the Villains again emerged victorious by an identical scoreline. On paper, that suggests a psychological edge for the hosts.

However, football is rarely that simple, and Villa’s current form tells a very different story.

After briefly looking like genuine title contenders earlier in the season, Aston Villa have unravelled over recent weeks. Unai Emery’s side has managed just one win in their last seven competitive matches. During that spell, they were eliminated from the FA Cup by Newcastle United, and followed that disappointment with a damaging 2–0 league defeat away to bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers.

What made the Wolves defeat even more concerning was Villa’s inefficiency. Despite dominating possession, they failed to score from 14 attempts on goal, including five shots on target. This lack of cutting edge has become a recurring theme. Prior to that, Villa were held to a 1–1 home draw against Leeds United, only salvaging a point thanks to an 88th-minute equaliser. They have also suffered narrow but costly 1–0 home defeats to Everton and Brentford.

With only four players unavailable, it’s difficult to attribute Villa’s downturn to injuries alone. Instead, this feels like a natural correction. In our view, Villa are closer to an average Premier League side than genuine contenders, and recent results suggest the league table is beginning to reflect that reality.

Chelsea’s recent form isn’t perfect either, with just two points collected from their last three league matches. Newly appointed head coach Liam Rosenior will undoubtedly be frustrated, particularly given that indiscipline has played a role, with red cards in each of the last two games.

That said, the underlying performances have been far more encouraging than the results imply. At the weekend against Arsenal, a 10-man Chelsea side still managed to dominate possession against the league leaders. The expected goals data suggested the Blues were unlucky not to come away with at least a point, and many observers felt officiating decisions favoured the home side.

While Chelsea do have defensive issues and are missing a few key players, we don’t see those concerns as deal-breakers here. In fact, Chelsea have been particularly impressive on the road this season and often appear to raise their performance level against stronger opposition.

If Chelsea can keep all 11 players on the pitch, we believe they have enough quality, control, and motivation to take all three points against a Villa side playing under growing pressure from their home supporters.
