BANGOR 1:30 – DIVA LUNA 15/8
If this race were a handicap hurdle, JOYEUSE would be giving weight away to all the others. With a rating of 142, she’s clearly a talented individual. Nicky Henderson isn’t wasting any time switching the grey to fences, which suggests she’s a natural jumper of the bigger obstacles. However, I’m convinced that another of these runners will make an even better chaser – namely DIVA LUNA.
The Ben Pauling-trained six-year-old has won three of her seven races and is now rated a solid 132. The DIAMOND BOY daughter is a strong individual who was merely marking time over hurdles. Even so, she ran a fantastic third in a 29-runner handicap at the Cheltenham Festival, and she’s got plenty of natural speed to be ideally suited by this 2m1½f trip. To cut a long story short, I’ve been waiting for this day – and will be betting accordingly!

BANGOR 3:00 – COUNT OF VENDOME 9/2
This is an interesting novice hurdle, so let’s delve into the runners!
FILIBUSTERING was a fair performer on the Flat when trained by Tim Easterby. Since joining Harry Derham to go hurdling, the four-year-old has won a Kelso hurdle before finishing a 30-length sixth of 13 in a Grade 1 at Aintree. Connections clearly rate the son of POSTPONED highly, but he carries a penalty and will need to improve.
At the start of the new season, the Nigel & Willy Twiston-Davies partnership had their string well forward. With that in mind, it would be wrong to expect all of their runners to improve for their seasonal debuts. On that note, SHABALKO won his Uttoxeter race with a bit in hand – but that was expected, and this contest looks tougher!
I’m siding with hurdling debutant COUNT OF VENDOME, as he showed excellent and progressive form in bumpers. The Donald McCain-trained five-year-old won twice in that sphere and clearly has the scope to progress again now he’s hurdling. Considering his potential, these odds look great!

AYR 1:15 – DE LEGISLATOR 11/4
Take note – BUSTY BOY has won once but finished second on nine occasions. Horses like that are easy to take on, so I suggest you do just that!
BREEZE OF WIND is a strong stayer on a fair handicap mark. He’s proven at the track and entitled to run well; however, stable form is enough of a concern to look elsewhere.
Based on his recent effort, FORGED WELL needs to prove his wellbeing. On a more upbeat note, he should make a better chaser than he was a hurdler, and the soft ground is a plus.
Nicky Richards has his team in good form, and the stable’s runner PRESIDENT SCOTTIE is capable of producing a solid round of jumping. With all that said, DE LEGISLATOR is a strong bet!
Derek Fox takes the ride on this lightly-raced eight-year-old, and I’m expecting him to leave this handicap mark of 112 behind. He hasn’t been the easiest individual to train, but he’s won three of his five races and is actually three pounds lower in this category. Conditions are spot on – big bet!
