CHELTENHAM PREMIUM BETTING TIPS: 3 FOR FREE

1:10 – NEWTON TORNADO (5/1)

This is a competitive chase, plenty here with genuine claims. Luckily, we’ve had one in the notebook for a while which makes the decision more straightforward. But before we land on the selection, let’s run through some of the main contenders.

DARCY’S FRIEND comes over from Emmet Mullins’ yard but has been beaten as favourite on his last three starts. He’ll need to jump a lot better than he did on his chasing debut.

Plenty will side with SPRING’S A GIRL, trained by Martin Keighley and with Champion Jockey Sean Bowen on board. However, both of her career wins came on very different tracks to Cheltenham, and that’s a concern.

DOUBLE POWERFUL has winning form over hurdles here, so connections clearly think he’s ready for a go at fences. Still, I’m wary—why wait until after 14 hurdle runs to make the switch?

I’m keen on chasing debutant NEWTON TORNADO, a six-race gelding who should improve for fences. The Rebecca Curtis-trained six-year-old ran an excellent second here behind the 133-rated LA LUNA, giving away the 7lb sex allowance and only beaten 1.75 lengths. The third from that race is rated 124, so the form stacks up. He also won on his final hurdles start, and today’s 2m4f on this ground looks ideal. I’ve snapped up some of the early prices—and I’ll be going in again later!

2:20 – HYLAND (7/1)

THE SHORT GO runs for a yard in great form and finished second in this race last year. He’ll need to jump better this time and is 6lb higher in the weights, so I’m looking elsewhere.

BACKMERSACKME has won just 1 of 16, not the kind of profile you want in a race like this. TRANSMISSION is a course-and-distance winner and still fairly treated, but he doesn’t seem to have much upside.

THREE CARD BRAG stays well, but I don’t back anything from the Gordon Elliott team. HOLY SMOKE JOE is worth a mention with the Skeltons firing again, but my selection is clear:

HYLAND is the class act in this field. The Nicky Henderson-trained eight-year-old has won 3 of his 7 chase starts, including twice over this course and distance. With Nico de Boinville in the saddle, fitness shouldn’t be an issue, and a mark of 147 looks manageable. Confident bet.

2:55 – MA SHANTOU (100/30)

LONG DRAW ticks the course box and the trip is ideal. With Olly Murphy operating at 11 winners from his last 21 runners, the 168-day break shouldn’t be a hindrance. Still, I think there are better options.

When Willie Mullins sends one to Cheltenham, you take notice. CHART TOPPER has room to improve and looks a solid each-way player.

I don’t normally back favourites in these big fields, but MA SHANTOU looks a proper bet. Emma Lavelle has her horses flying, and this lightly raced six-year-old sneaks in off a very workable mark. Last seen finishing 7th of 20 in a Grade One at the Festival, he’d previously been third to the now 143-rated THE YELLOW CAR, with 134-rated MOON ROCKET second, and the fourth—17 lengths back—rated 132. That’s solid form.

Three miles is his trip, the ground is spot on, and with more improvement to come, I’m thinking—cracking bet!
