2:28 – WISE GUY (4/1)
From July to October, BAIKAL won three of his five races, taking the six-year-old’s career tally to six wins from 39 starts. Since the first of those wins, the son of NO NAY NEVER has been put up 13lb, including a further 4lb rise for winning last time out at Uttoxeter. While he has scored off a similar mark before, the testing ground and stronger grade should be enough to stop him this time.
SURRY LORD made a pleasing return from his summer break. The Toby Lawes-trained gelding will relish the testing ground, should strip fitter for the run, and looks capable of being in the mix for a place.
On his first start for Alison Thorpe, CLONDAW FAME finished second of six over this course and distance. The handicapper raised him 2lb for that effort, making life slightly tougher, but he’s another who should be thereabouts.
My idea of the winner is the Stuart Edmunds-trained WISE GUY. The twice-winning son of MUHTATHIR has dropped 9lb in the weights, and his best efforts have come on testing ground. While he hasn’t always delivered on promise, everything looks in place for a big run today.
2:58 – ROSSCAHILL (9/4)
Having raced only nine times by the age of nine suggests HOUSE OF STORIES has been difficult to train. To be fair, he’s on a decent handicap mark and handles testing conditions, but experience tells me to stay away from fragile types.
As with many from the yard, PIMLICO POINT has proven better over fences than hurdles. While the eight-year-old should be competitive off 121, he’s likely to need this first run of the season.
In my opinion, both HOLOKEA and MADAKET are worth taking on. BELLS OF PETERBORO has the benefit of the Champion Jockey in the saddle and can run a big race, but for the winner, I won’t be looking beyond ROSSCAHILL.
Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies aren’t wasting any time sending the six-year-old chasing — always a positive sign. In fact, the son of MALINAS ran only three times over hurdles, winning two of them. Coming from a stable in cracking form is an added bonus, as is the fact that the ground will suit him perfectly. To cut a long story short, this unexposed gelding looks a smart chasing prospect, and this is a very winnable race.

3:28 – TOMMY’S CHARM (8/1)
Despite being a course-and-distance winner who has landed his last three starts, I can’t have FILANDERER at the prices. The Hughie Morrison-trained nine-year-old begins his season on a stiff handicap mark and faces tougher opposition than he’s beaten before.
For me, Tom Lacey kept TUNE IN A BOX over hurdles for too long. If he were a natural chaser, the switch wouldn’t have taken 16 runs to happen!
With the Olly Murphy stable firing in winners, it’s fair to think chasing debutant DANGEROUS TOUCH will be ready to go. He switches to fences after just five hurdle starts — which suggests connections expect improvement. With the Champion Jockey booked, he’s almost certain to run a big race.
However, the one I like is TOMMY’S CHARM, a seven-year-old who went chasing after just two hurdle runs. The Kerry Lee-trained son of MOUNT NELSON ran an excellent second when last seen, and there’s every reason to think he’ll improve again this season. Notably, he won his seasonal debut last year — also on testing ground, which he’ll get again here.
Finally, it’s worth noting that Kerry Lee’s last three runners have finished 3rd, 2nd, and one fell when looking the likely winner at the final fence — a moral victory that shows the yard is very much in form!
