NEWBURY 2:40 – RODNEY 3/1While he was an impressive winner of his first two chase races, NOBLE PARK has struggled since being raised in the handicap. SCORESSE going up in the weights for finishing third at Cheltenham won’t help his cause, while SOUTHOFTHEBORDER hasn’t been showing enough resilience.
You won’t go far wrong supporting Kerry Lee runners, and in this one we should side with the stable’s RODNEY. While he is up 5lb for winning his last race, the 7-year-old won with a bit in hand. Since switching to fences, the gelding has won three of his five races, taking his rating from 107 to 129. While his three chase wins all came at right-handed tracks, he’s a past winner at Ffos Las, which is left-handed.
And here’s the punchline, and the reason for calling this bet: I actually believe he’s going to be better on this galloping course. The distance, the ground, and being ridden by Charlie Deutsch are all positives, with the jockey being three-from-three on the son of GOLDEN HORN.

NEWBURY 4:23 – HUFFIN AN A PUFFIN 7/2This is an interesting race, with several of the 10-runner field being unexposed. If settling, KILLWAUGHTER has the potential to do better, and his 7lb claiming jockey means he’ll be receiving a total of 12lb from the selection. However, we are fully focused on just one runner, so here it is:
There is more to come from HUFFIN AN A PUFFIN. The Lucy Wadham-trained 7-year-old has won both his races to date, and he should prove better than a mark of 123. In fact, he was only raised 3lb for winning at Doncaster, when beating STORMING GEORGE by ¾L, with the third in that race a further 15L back. One thing is certain: the late-developing 7-year-old comes from a stable in great form, and the conditions of this race are optimum.
DONCASTER 5:10 – OLD GREGORIAN 5/2PUSH THE BUTTON ran well in his first three races over fences, but his last run at Cheltenham was disappointing. While he could bounce back from that weak effort, for me he’s high in the ratings. Furthermore, he’s giving 14lb and upwards to the others, which is especially difficult in a small field.
AL KALILA dropped 4lb in the weights, but for the most part he’s become disappointing. In fact, he was the beaten favourite on his last three runs, finishing weakly in each. While the small field and Sean Bowen are positives for the 7-year-old, I’m not convinced he wants it.
Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore are back amongst the winners. Following 56 races without a win, the Perth & Kinross team have had five winners from their last 13 runners. As for their runner in this race, OLD GREGORIAN should be best served by the longer distance. Furthermore, he’s got the potential to be a better chaser than he was a hurdler, and a three-month break isn’t a deal-breaker.
