PLUMPTON 13:50

RETETI 8/1 (10s on the exchanges)

118-rated AMBIENTE FRIENDLY is back down in class, but I’m not convinced he’s a natural hurdler. While he’s rated a lofty 105 on the Flat, he hasn’t reached the same level over timber.

LOOPING D’ARC proved difficult to handle when running out at Hereford. Previously, he had looked decent when winning at Southwell, so the hope is that switching back to a left-handed track, with nowhere to escape, will help his jockey. Nevertheless, he too is carrying a penalty, and on testing ground that will make life harder.

EDDIE MY EAGLE should be capable of further improvement, but current odds of 7/2 exaggerate his chance. Locally trained CANOPUS is making his hurdling debut. Since last running on the Flat, the son of AUSTRALIA has left Ed Walker to join Gary & Josh Moore. The lightly raced gelding was rated a solid 79 on the Flat, suggesting he has the scope to do well at this game. However, he does need to prove he can jump and stay the distance.

If I were Sheena West, I would have entered RETETI in a handicap hurdle. After all, he’s only rated 105, and his last run suggests that’s a very interesting mark. That said, the Lewes trainer may have wanted to keep the six-year-old at this track, as this is where he ran particularly well last time out.

SEA THRIFT 7/2

Despite winning his last race at Fontwell by 19 lengths, I want to take on the short-priced favourite SUPERSTYLIN. While the nine-year-old was only raised 5lb for winning that three-runner race, he’s never won on soft ground.

David Brace-trained APPLICATIONOFCASH will need to settle better if he’s going to win a race, although to be fair he should come on for his most recent run.

SANITISER is more exposed than the others, and he’s not a natural chaser. I’m interested to see how the outsider of the party, KNOWN RUN, goes on his chasing debut, as he’s lightly raced and has had a wind operation since last running.

The one that stands out is SEA THRIFT, who was in the process of running a big race before falling on her chasing debut. Analytically speaking, the Daisy Hitchins-trained seven-year-old had jumped the first 12 fences well, and Exeter is a tougher track than Plumpton. The lightly raced daughter of BULLET TRAIN clearly handles the ground and is receiving plenty of weight from the others. With a clear round, the mare should be another winner for the Dorset yard.

HANDIN MANYPOCKETS 5/1

On official figures, BIG TICKET comes out better at the weights compared to DRACO MALFOY. However, while the Kim Bailey- and Matt Nicholls-trained six-year-old finished a solid second last time out, BIG TICKET was pulled up at Ascot. Still, at odds of around 8/13, the favourite is uninteresting.

I want to take on the two principals with HANDIN MANYPOCKETS, a five-year-old who made a very promising start over hurdles for trainer Syd Hosie. The son of POET’S WORD ran above expectations (33/1) when finishing 4th of 7 at Cheltenham behind STEP AHEAD. He was only beaten 9¾ lengths by a horse rated 124, and bearing in mind it was his debut, he wasn’t given a hard ride by Rex Dingle.

A look through the gelding’s breeding points to soft ground being an advantage, so with improvement likely, there is enough reason to chance the 5/1 shot.
