THREE FREE HORSERACING VALUE PICKS INCLUDING AN 18/1 SHOT
MARKET RASEN 12:10 – LOCK STOCK (5/2)
I’m not sure everyone understands this advantage, so I’ll quickly explain for those who don’t.This is an 8-runner race, meaning 3 places if all go to post. Since the first four are well clear in the betting, it’s fair to assume three of them will occupy the places.
At current odds (5/2 favourite), the place terms are approximately 1.50, 1.50, 1.55, and 1.67. The true place odds should be closer to 1.33, 1.33, 1.38, and 1.45. In this instance, backing your fancy each way adds value to your bet!
IS THIS FOR REAL won a Point-to-Point for former trainer Georgina Ellis, and one of two Bumpers for Fergal O’Brien. However, while he got the job done, the form is only average.
Since last running, KING’S CHAMPION has left the Paul Nicholls yard to join Ollie Murphy. For his former trainer, the son of Jeu St Eloi was 3rd of 10 in a Ffos Las Bumper. He should improve a little, but that form is nothing more than fair.
The best Bumper form belongs to the Nicky Richards-trained JAPETUS. The 4-year-old showed promise on debut before landing back-to-back wins in that sphere. Coming from a stable in good form is a definite positive, and he should run his race.
However, for the winner, I’m siding with LOCK STOCK. The Ben Pauling-trained 5-year-old is yet to win in four starts, but he made what I consider a strong hurdling debut. Despite running green, the Jake Hobbs-ridden gelding kept on well to chase home 118-rated BIG GINGE, with 123-rated MILAN TINO back in fourth. The third horse in that race bolted up by 20 lengths next time out — so there you have it!
MARKET RASEN 1:13 – KLAPTON BOY (17/2)
I can understand why ROE AND CO is a short-priced favourite — he won easily last week and escapes a penalty. He also sports first-time cheekpieces, and on this occasion, his jockey takes off a further three pounds. Coming from a stable in top form is another plus, but it’s worth noting that this track and ground are very different!
Chasing debutant PADDY O’MAHLER makes little appeal, especially at around 7/2. Former flat horse ISLE OF SARK won just 3 of his 46 starts, and he hardly looks a natural chaser.
With everything considered, it’s worth chancing KLAPTON BOY. The Nick Kent-trained 5-year-old makes a quick switch to fences and looks sure to be suited by this longer trip. A mark of 96 seems more than fair — and so do his current odds!
SEDGEFIELD 12:50 – DUDLEY’S BAR (18/1)
You’d have to be brain-dead to take 2/1 about NATIONAL QUESTION. Yes, he won last time out and carries a light weight in a weak race — but he’s not one you can trust.
I’ve a feeling TANKING ALONG needs a right-handed track, and Sedgefield is the opposite. One that does like it here is CLEAN GETAWAY, who’s entitled to be competitive. ASCENSION DAY still has questions to answer, while James Owen has yet to unlock SASSIFIED.
At much bigger odds, it’s worth taking a poke at 18/1 shot DUDLEY’S BAR. The Paula Smith-trained 6-year-old made a satisfactory return to the track, and this easier ground should suit him better again. I’m just saying!
