TOP RACING SERVICE PICKS – FRIDAY 7 OCTOBER

EXETER 1:50 – WESTERN NIGHT (8/1)

According to the ratings, QUEBECOIS is the one to beat. The lightly raced six-year-old won two of his five hurdle starts, achieving a mark of 140 in the process. Paul Nicholls isn’t wasting any time switching the son of No Risk At All to fences, which suggests he’s a natural jumper. However, while the Nicholls yard has sent out seven winners from 34 runners over the past two weeks, a few of their horses have looked as though they needed the run.

DOYEN QUEST made a winning start over fences but has been beaten on both subsequent outings. Moreover, he was 8/13 at Chepstow last time, and based on that effort, the penalised seven-year-old looks vulnerable.

Although he’s yet to race over fences, TINY TETLEY is more exposed than the other three runners. The seven-year-old lacks scope, and I’m not convinced he’ll progress to the same level in this sphere.

I’m prepared to take a chance on another chasing debutant – WESTERN NIGHT. The Joe Tizzard-trained six-year-old won on his seasonal debut last term and looks a real chasing type. While he has a bit to find on hurdles form, a good round of jumping could make all the difference!

EXETER 4:10 – ISLAND RUN (9/1)

Chester Williams has a strong hand today, and his LOKI’S MISCHIEF should be capable of better. He’s certainly one with a chance, and the same can be said for JACK SPRAT, who made a pleasing return when finishing second at Bangor. He represents a trainer in fine form, and the fact he’s a course-and-distance winner is another plus. Gavin Sheehan taking over in the saddle adds further appeal.

However, for the winner, I’m siding with ISLAND RUN. The Philip Hobbs & Jason White-trained seven-year-old hasn’t been seen for a while but has plenty of scope and looks well handicapped. Callum Pritchard taking off an additional 5lb is a big bonus, and we know he’s a strong stayer who should relish this stiff three miles.

FONTWELL 2:00 – MALAGO ROSE (9/2)

When last seen, FOR GINA wasn’t running particularly well. Nevertheless, Lucy Wadham is more than capable of reviving one, and a disappointing campaign last season means she starts from a workable mark.

At ten years old, FLINTARA isn’t improving. Richard J Bandey’s mare hasn’t won for two years and isn’t exactly prolific, though she stays strongly and could grab a place.

Simply put, JUST A MEMORY ran a desperate race last time out. Connections are hoping first-time blinkers will do the trick, but I’m not convinced.

I like the booking of 7lb claimer Harriet Tucker for MALAGO ROSE, who also won first time up last season. The undulations and soft ground will pose no issue, and she wasn’t beaten far off her current mark of 100 when running at Plumpton. She looks primed for a big run.
