WARWICK RACES – EARLY INSIDE NOTES FOR THE FIRST FOUR RACES
1:40 – SO YOU KNOW (6/4)Most of this field look fully exposed, although TIME INTERVAL is now back below his last winning handicap mark. David Dennis has his string in good form and Charlie Maggs is a very capable conditional jockey. That said, the eight-year-old wasn’t running particularly well when last seen and now meets a younger, less exposed rival with plenty in his favour.
SO YOU KNOW will be ridden by Aamilah Aswat and, as he rides for his own stable, he can claim an additional 3lb. In fact, the total claim comes to 10lb today, which is a significant advantage. The five-year-old hasn’t been seen for 102 days, but I actually see that as a positive.
2:10 – TALAKAN (5/2)LEGAL WEAPON ticks the course box but still has plenty to find on the book. GREAT FLEET needs to bounce back from a disappointing run and it’s hard to see him making much of an impact.
At the head of the market is WILSTAR, trained by Olly Murphy. The six-year-old is rated 120 by the handicapper and carries a 7lb penalty for his last win, with the early market suggesting he’s better than that mark. My question is simple — if that’s the case, why isn’t he heading into a handicap?
The one to be on is TALAKAN, an unpenalised four-year-old who receives a 10lb age allowance. The ex-French son of Golden Horn has run two solid races over hurdles and, on form, he looks the one to beat.

2:40 – IONIAN (11/2)WONDERING WHY won last time out for the Basher Watts Racing Club and could improve again. However, the five-year-old carries a penalty and the market again looks to be overrating the horse compared to his official mark.
KING AL is much better off at the weights than he would be in a handicap and the forecast good ground should suit him better than the soft conditions he faced last time.
That said, the betting value could lie with IONIAN, although he does need to bounce back from a below-par run last time. In truth, I believe the Fakenham track was the reason for that performance. His previous second to CRACKERJACQUE reads very well in this company, and with the Nicky Henderson yard in excellent form he looks worth chancing at the odds.
3:10 – JIMMY HURDSTROM (17/2)GOT A DREAM was in excellent form when last seen and should still have improvement to come. However, the current 3/1 looks a little short — I would have him closer to 5/1.
KEL DE LARGE has won four of his seven races but may now be feeling the full grip of the handicapper.
ILITCH should appreciate the drop back to 2m5f, although a 4lb rise for finishing second last time is a slight concern. JUKEBOX KING is interesting, but at the bigger price I prefer taking a chance on JIMMY HURDSTROM.
The key for the Tony Bloom-owned six-year-old will be settling better early on, and that should be helped by the 3f drop in trip. One thing is certain — he still looks to have more in the locker and this track should suit him well.
